I want to move from Miami, FL to Hawaii (Oahu or Maui). How much money should I save up before I leave?

SwellSurfer17 asked:

I am looking to find a job when I get there. I would be content with just sharing a room with someone else. Also, is buying a bike to get around a good idea?

Yeah, a TON of people just have bikes there. Plus it’s a good idea b/c the gas is a bit more expensive down there. Enjoy your new home if you really do go! My uncle moved there a long time ago and he LOVES it! I vacationed there and I wish I could pack up and leave :-)

Hawaii is a beautiful place to live but is so expensive. When I visited there I paid 25 dollars for 4 people to get 1 scoop of ice cream each. So depending on what you would consider comfortable will determine how much money you should save.

I do know for sure that at McDonalds on Waikiki Beach for the Big Mac, only cost one dollar more than in Orlando Fla!! My inlaws live in Orlando, and they said that the prices in Oahu aren’t that bad at all. Just a little more expensive. I hope this helps you out!!
Yes, buying a bike would be an excellent idea!! You would certainly save on gas!! Just have fun and “hang loose”!!
I hope these sources will be of some help to you!!

Oahu is probably more realistic for jobs.

There’s a book you can read called “So You Want to Live in Hawaii”:

Find a shared room to rent:

Get familiar with where to live where you won’t need a car.

    Get around without a car:
    Transportation (THE BUS)
For those who do not own a vehicle, Oahu’s excellent bus system offers more than 70 routes and 4,000 bus stops. The fees are $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for students. For inquiries, phone:
    Bus Schedules/Information (800) 848-5555
    Bus Passes (800) 848-4444
    Website:
(I don’t find much on this site, probably best to sign up with a temp agency or search through craigslist.org or the news papers)

Find a rental & check out local news:

    Maui:

    Good luck!

defiantly save thousands you’ll need it:p
rent is high, so is food costs, and gas is about $3.40 right now
If you are looking for a good job the best is the Honolulu advertiser or the normal websites career builder, monster jobs, etc…
A lot of people have a very hard time getting a job here that is decent and most of the companies don’t like you to apply until you are on the island (no out of state-rs) unfortunately… GOOD LUCK THOUGH:)

Things are kind of expensive here though, especially housing. Most of the studios here rent for at least $850/mth and above and housing is scarce here with not many selections. Shared rentals are probably cheaper and you can find them at, and

The bus is quite efficient too as there are many bus routes and they come quite frequently. You can buy a bike to get around too but I would think the bus is enough. The buses are packed with people at some times. You can also put your bike on the bike rack provided by the bus when you take the bus.
