Taking food items from California to Maui?

SamKim asked:

I am going to Maui on vacation. I wanted to know if it is allowed to take food (such as pre-marinated meat or chicken - frozen) in the flight?

depends on what airlines you booked your travels with to maui..some dont let frozen food items on their flights especially long flights. other then that why would you want to bring food when you can get it right here in the local supermarkets!!

    i think so..

whenever my grampa comes back home from the Philippines, he brings back bongos [this kind of fish marinated in vinegar] that my aunt makes for him.

yes you can pack frozen meats. it just has to go under the plane. i take salmon with me from washington to maui and when i go from maui back to washington i bring everything i can possibly carry that i can’t get in washington…like black crab, opihi, aku palu(you probably don’t know what opihi and aku palu is…it’s a type of seafood…raw), portugese sausage, pastele…so yah, you can take frozen food. i dunno why you would wanna do that but it’s your life not mines! lol. have a safe trip and happy travels! aloooha!

The best answer is to asked your airline. Since the 911, I am not sure, but have done so long time ago. I used an ice chest filled with dry ice. I would also suggest to vaccum seal your food if you have those gadgets, lessen the chance of spoilaged along with the dry ice.

    ?
I can imagine bringing stuff from Maui- pineapple, papaya, even fish! But why go through the trouble of taking chicken and marinade there? When you get there- just go to the supermarket.

Check with the airlines. You may have to pack it in dry ice and in a cooler. You most likely can’t hand carry it.
